Presented by Prof Dr Lore Decoster (University Hospital Brussels, Belgium)
During ELCC 2025, Prof Lore Decoster, medical oncologist at the University Hospital Brussels, presented the results of the AIBED project. This first-of-its-kind Belgian study uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) to deliver comprehensive real-world insights into lung cancer patient trajectories, bridging the gap between clinical trial results and patient care in routine practice. Despite missing data on testing rates, the rates of PD-L1 and EGFR mutation positivity correspond well with trial literature indicating high and robust uptake of molecular testing.
Data completeness, availability and variations between diverse electronic health record (HER) systems proved to be the main challenges in this trial and likely led to underreporting of some key variables, including testing rates. Attention to these issues alongside disease-specific algorithm improvements remain essential in this type of innovative research
