Updates in lung cancer screening
Prof Annemiek Snoeckx from the University Hospital in Antwerp presented the latest updates on screening at WCLC. One of the main topics that received a lot of attention was recruiting participants in screening trials. Unlike European studies, the meeting mainly focused on Asian trials that aimed at screening nonsmokers. Moreover, there is a shift in recruitment protocols towards using prediction models. Nowadays, the value of screening is widely recognised, and most countries have started population-based screening. Artificial intelligence in the context of screening is a hot topic and can be utilised at various levels, as explained by Professor Snoeckx. Another critical but challenging issue discussed was overdiagnosis, which is a consequence of more CT scans and screening protocols. Moving from trials to population-based screening requires quality assurance that should ideally be organised at a global level, according to Professor Snoeckx. The role of biomarkers and their potential use in screening is unclear, but it was undoubtedly another popular topic at this year’s WCLC.
