Breast cancer characteristics in premenopausal women by contraception method
The levonorgestrel intra-uterine device (LNG-IUD) is a widely used contraception method. Dr. Inés De Maeyer from UZ Leuven presented data exploring receptor expression in women < 56 years who had a LNG-IUD at diagnosis of primary invasive breast cancer. Patient and tumour characteristics, especially receptor subtypes in LNG-IUD users at diagnosis were compared with non- LNG-IUD users. With this retrospective study they aimed to validate the findings of a previous cohort having proportionally more PR, lower HER2 expression and more ER+PR+HER2- subtypes in LNG-IUD users compared to non-LNG-IUD users.
