Prof Dr Mariano Suppa, Associate Professor of Dermatology at Université Libre de Bruxelles, presented two interconnected topics at EADO 2025: new imaging devices for epithelial tumours and modern imaging of actinic skin damage.
He focused on a promising technology called LC-OCT (Line Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography), which combines the high resolution of confocal microscopy with the deep tissue penetration of OCT. This device allows high-quality in vivo imaging of epithelial tumours like basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and actinic keratosis, aiding both in diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
LC-OCT helps clinicians non-invasively assess treatment outcomes—whether after topical therapies or surgery—and can guide surgical planning by defining lesion margins more precisely. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence enhances the device’s capabilities by quantifying microscopic skin features such as dermal-epidermal junction undulation and epidermal cell atypia. This has potential applications beyond cancer diagnosis, including the study of field cancerisation and skin ageing, with possible relevance in dermato-aesthetic research.
